Fashion Friday on the Plaza

On Friday I attended Fashion Friday at the Plaza in Oakland for an evening of fun and shopping. I was also very curious with the concept of mobile boutiques. I’ve become accustomed to seeing food trucks in the Bay Area, but fashion trucks!? Where have these chic stores been hiding all my life!?
This event was made possible by Popuphood. Popuphood is a small business incubator focused on revitalizing neighborhoods block by block. Oakland may be known for many things, but I wouldn’t say Fashion comes to the forefront of that list. Personally, I always think of San Francisco, but after this event it is pretty evident Oakland has style.

The trucks that were present at the event were: Go Go Glam, JasyB, Oaklandish, Stop Shop & Roll, Just Because, The Butler’s Pantry, Topshelf, and Pretty Parlor A Go Go. It amazed me that there were so many trucks related to fashion, and that there was even a mobile beauty salon. Perfect to invite to your home for a wedding or party. There was even a truck that sold for house-ware supplies (Perfect for me since I also like pretty thing in my kitchen!) Having a chic mobile boutique seems like such a great concept. Sometimes you just need the store to come to you.
The highlight of the evening was the fashion show which showcased items from the local boutiques. Here are a few of my favorite looks:

The models make their final pose.

Everyone looked chic and our MC event was very entertaining. After visiting the mobile boutiques and seeing the show, I left with the impression that Oakland definitely has some style cred.
I am hoping to see more fashion-related events in the East Bay, until then make sure to “Like” me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter to stay updated with events in the Bay Area.

School Boy

Blazer, T-Shirt and Ring Forever 21 | Red Shorts Erin Fetherston for Target | Gold Chain Necklace Found via Garage Sale | Gold Beatrix Flats Sam Edelman
Happy Friday Everyone!
I had an obsession with blazers last week and stuck to the same red and blue color scheme as I did with my Snow White look from Monday’s post. You know what they say, “if it ain’t broke don’t mess with it.”
Last Thursday, I went to watch Star Trek Into Darkness and wanted to be comfortable sitting in a theater and also something I could be cool in during the warm day. I opted to wear the shorts and I felt like a school boy ditching class to watch a movie. (The theater is located near a public high school, so I am sure that does happen often.) I channeled this inner rebel and translated that into my outfit with the chain details and the spikes on the flats. (Special thanks to +Inda Liza Luciano for letting me shop her closet and finding the cool chain necklace.) I’ll be wearing the necklace and the shorts a lot this summer, so be prepared to see them frequently!
Hope you enjoy the first Day of Summer and have a fun-filled weekend! If you are in the bay area tonight don’t forget Fashion Friday on the Plaza is happening in Oakland. Just in case you are interested in free wine and a different type of shopping experience.

Modern Day Snow White

Navy Blazer Moschino Cheap and Chic | Cream Ruffle Blouse Ari & Kris | Red Quilted Handbag Kate Spade |Navy, Red, and Gold Print Scarf Pucci | Logan Glitter D’orsay Pumps Jimmy Choo | Apple Ring Forever 21 | Camera iPhone Case iCA GizmonHere is the outfit I wore to the +Eventbrite event that I wrote about on my last post.
As I was getting dressed that morning, I thought of what I would call this post. At first I had just the navy and yellow mixed with the white blouse to represent Cal’s school colors. I wanted to incorporate the scarf so I added that to the Kate Spade bag, gifted to me from a co-worker, and immediately felt matchy-matchy and polished. Since I had all the primary colors going on I felt I looked like a school teacher, and so proceeded to add the apple ring because, for some reason, apples are associated with teachers and school.
Then I got to work and one of the student interns said the colors reminded them of +Disney’s Snow White. The apple ring surprised her and she could not believe the weird coincidence that I would pair that with the the colors from Snow White’s Dress! I watched pretty much all the Disney movies growing up, especially the Princess ones, and I can’t believe I didn’t think of my outfit as a Modern Day Snow White!
Needless to say I might be watching more Disney movies in the near future. Uh, you know, for outfit inspiration.

Eventbrite Presents: Start Ups & Style

On Wednesday night, +Eventbrite hosted an event at their headquarters called Start Ups and Style. San Francisco is known for many things, but fashion isn’t the first thought that pops into a tourist’s mind. Monuments, food and technology: these are people’s first thoughts. Luckily, fashion in the bay area is being highlighted thanks to the seamless marriage of technology and fashion as shown through the success of many start ups born from here.

The highlights of the event were the booths of the Start Ups dripping with style such as LE TOTE, Bonobos, Threadflip, and Lotus Premium Denim.  Armed with a glass of champagne and with my bestie blogger, Elise from WTFAB!,we mingled with representatives from the Start Ups and with fellow blogger friends throughout the night.

Elise and I get a peek inside LE TOTE, a clothing “netflix” site for unlimited “tote” deliveries for only $49 a month. There is even an option to buy an item if you really love it. I felt like a kid in a candy store when I laid eyes on their gorgeous jewelry!

I also stopped by Threadflip, an online and mobile service that allows women to shop and sell unusued/preowned items. I’ve been using Poshmark, which is similar, but what has me sold with Threadflip is the white glove concierge service. Threadflip sends you a prepaid box, you send them the clothes you want to part with, and they photograph and post the items for you after you approve the prices. (Bonus: you can also have items go on sale automatically after a certain amount of time!)

BloomThat provided gorgeous flower arrangements at the event. Suprisingly, there was also a booth for Men’s clothing presented by Bonobos. Looks like gingham is in for summer!

Along with the start ups, free makeovers were available (at least for your hair and nails) courtesy of the Beauty professionals from StyleSeat. There was also a prize for the best dressed guest, and this was done via instagram with the hashtag startupsandstyle2013. Adding #hashtagphotobooth allowed for those pictures to be printed during the event at The Laugh Box station. (Such a good idea for guests at a wedding: just take your photo using your phone, upload via instagram with a hashtag, and voila!) Congrats to Carlina from Allergic to Vanilla for winning the best dressed contest!

I was so stoked with all the freebies like the gift bags for the first 100 guests filled with goodies from 7X7, Uber, Gogobot, LE TOTE, Yelp, and Eventbrite! The best freebie were the  mini cupcakes: Perfect dessert to accompany fashion if I do say so myself.

The event was really fun and I am excited to check out the sites of the start ups that were there, especially Le TOTE and Threadflip.

Thanks +Boutiika for giving me a heads up about the event and many thanks to +Eventbrite for hosting such a fun and engaging event! And most importantly, a big thank you to Armando for taking photos at the event!

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Cupcakes

I shared photos on Instagram earlier this week of some Peanut Butter and Chocolate cupcakes and after some requests I decided to share the recipe I used to make these. I feel like I don’t post cupcakes on this blog often enough, but part of that reason is that I have been busy/ focused on the Fashion and Events portion of my blog. Then there is the constant closet clean out that makes my small, studio apartment feel claustrophobic since not all of my clothes are hanging in a closet. I hate admitting I have piles of clothes scattered throughout the apartment that I am working on selling because I consider myself a neat freak, but I blame Armando for taking up 1/3 of our closet. (Side note: he probably doesn’t even have that much space and I am probably just a clothes hoarder.)
Since I am sharing the skeletons inside (and outside) of my closet, whenever I make cupcakes I typically do not make them from scratch. (Gasp!) Shocking I know, but sometimes it is either that or no cupcakes at all and making no cupcakes is sometimes unacceptable! And who doesn’t like Betty Crocker anyway?
While I used the store-bought cake mix, I did add some unique touches that you are welcome to try (and change) to improve the cupcake.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Cupcakesby Brandy Saldana June-14-2013Ingredients1 Box Betty Crocker Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix4 Large Eggs1 Cup Buttermilk (substitutes water) 1 Cup Reese’s Peanut Butter Chips1 Can Vanilla Frosting1 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter Chocolate Sprinkles (optional)InstructionsFollow the directions on the box substituting the water listed on the box with a cup of buttermilk. If you are like me don’t have buttermilk readily available sometimes, you can substitute by adding a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes so that the milk curdles a bit. I add buttermilk to box cake mix for a denser cake which is useful when doing a lot of elaborate decorations. (If you prefer a moister cupcake, you do not have to follow the directions of adding buttermilk and an extra egg, but I thought I’d share what I did to make it firm.)

With the oven preheated to 350 degrees and the cake batter mixed well, fill up 2/3 of the paper liners in your pan with batter. I added the Reese’s Peanut Butter Chips after I filled the liners and tried to mix them in each liner to spread out evenly using a toothpick. I prefer adding small items like this at the end to spread them out evenly in each cupcake. Mixing them in the bowl first could result in the chips ending up at the bottom and leave some cupcakes without any.

While you bake and let the cupcakes cool, you can prepare the frosting. I placed half the frosting in a small bowl and half of the peanut butter. I listed 1/2 Cup total, but more can be added depending on how strong you want the peanut butter flavor. While I know how to make frosting from scratch, this is definitely easier and not as time-consuming. If you ever need to bake in a rush but still want a unique flavor, this is the way to go.

For the swirl on the cupcake I used a Wilton 1M swirl tip. I tend to not overwhelm my cupcakes with frosting so I swirled a generous amount of frosting starting from the outside going in. I do have bags by Wilton that I use for the frosting, but you can also use 1 gallon freezer bags and cut the right size hole at one of the corners to also get the job done. Add the sprinkles if you like before the frosting hardens, and then you are done!DetailsPrep time: 16 mins Cook time: 16 mins Total time: 36 mins Yield: 24 Cupcakes

My co-workers and I tested them and everyone approved so I hope they tickle your taste buds too. (I displayed them in my cubicle on a pastry plate that I purchased at Ikea.) I really hope you enjoyed my first recipe post for cupcakes and I am inspired to share more in the future. Let me know if you try this recipe or how you put your own spin on it.

Eye of the Tiger

Cardigan and Tiger Bangle Forever 21 | Emerald Green Silk Wrap Top Diane Von Furstenberg | Shiny Black Pants  Anchor Blue | Gold Glitter Bello Peep-Toe Wedges Jimmy ChooThis outfit is from last month and I wore it to a vendor fair for laser safety. I wanted to wear something relevant to the fair, so picked to wear my DVF wrap top that I found (new with tags) at Crossroads Trading Co. It is a bright green that I thought could be reminiscent of a laser beam (or light saber).
I love the color of this top and using it as my the base of my outfit, I picked out the Tiger Cuff I found at Forever 21 because of the emerald green eyes that matched my top. The gold helped me pick out the glitter wedges and belt as a way to compliment the rich green and black colors. I’ve worn these wedges a number of times already and I adore them! I am so glad I bought these in gold and silver! They make any outfit I wear just a little more interesting.
On Tuesday, I posted some photos on Instagram of Peanut Butter and Chocolate cupcakes I made and after some requests I decided to share the recipe for them on my next post. I have a bunch of outfit photos on my camera and will be covering a fashion event that I was invited to tonight, so I have a lot of fashion-related posts in the queue. But this blog is titled Will Bake for Shoes and it would be very silly if I didn’t include a recipe every now and then. So stay tuned for a yummy blend of peanut butter and chocolate coming your way later this week.
